Law School Competition Teams: Practicing for Practice

Richard A. Bales

Abstract:

This article explores the multifaceted benefits of law school competition teams as experiential learning platforms that bridge the gap between doctrinal legal education and real-world practice. Through participation in moot court, trial advocacy, client counseling, arbitration, and negotiation competitions, students acquire practical skills such as legal research, oral advocacy, teamwork, and client interaction. The article emphasizes how these competitions foster professional development, offer networking opportunities, and enhance employability, especially for students whose academic grades may not fully reflect their potential. With immediate feedback and hands-on experience, competition teams serve as invaluable training grounds for future legal practitioners.
